Step 1: the Art of Breathing

Merry Christmas!

The holidays are a time to spend with those we love, and miss those we are not with at the moment. I am very lucky to have the people in my life that I do. I have begun to set myself on a dance and personal growth journey. I want to become a better person.

I bought the book Deep Yoga to help me. my first lesson: the art of breathing. breathe in, breathe out. My affirmation: I will be successful. There are people out there who don’t want to see others succeed, but that is just fine, we will overcome. I know there are more people who believe in me than not, and for a reason.

I will spend the rest of my holiday break breathing, relaxing, and
jumping into as many puddles as I can.
I love life.

Goal: $5000 (this accumulates to the cost of attending one intensive)
Due: May 2013

Beginning of my journey

Dear reader,

My name is Ruben Medina, a senior at Cal State Dominguez Hills. A physics major actually.. but more than just that, a dancer as well. I started dancing nearly 6 years ago, after landing two jobs: school cafeteria and McDonalds. I used every penny I had to take dance classes and decided I wanted to be a dancer. Eventually, I went to CSU East Bay, but I wanted more opportunities. I ended up switching schools and majors. I ended up staying at CSU Dominguez Hills.

I stopped dancing because someone told me I was not good enough and that I should be doing something I am good at. I love physics and do not regret it one bit, but I believe in the myself now more than ever. I also believe that I want to finish what I have started by making myself happy. Currently, I am proudly dancing in the Nickerson-Rossi Dance Company, as well as dancing at my school and various studios. I believe that my goals are big and that money is the only thing standing in my way, although I wish it weren’t.

I decided to leave everything behind, even if its just for a moment and take a journey this summer to immerse myself in dance training by some of the worlds largest dance intensives. I decided to audition through video and in person to the following dance intensives: Alonzo King LINES Ballet, American Ballet Theater, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Jacobs Pillow and Netherlands Dance Theater. Of course, I will apply for scholarships, but those are very few and limited. That is why I am asking you, the reader, to donate any amount of money to my cause. The more I raise, the more intensives I am able to go to this summer and the better I will become.

Over the course of my journey, I will be updating with pictures, videos and insight as to my progress. I will also keep this blog updated daily, sort of like a video/picture/message diary, when I am at these intensives.
